Honey bees are protecting elephants and farming land in Africa
If there is one thing that an elephant is afraid of, it’s a bee! When they hear a sound of a bee swarm buzzing, they flee from the area immediately. When bees sting inside their sensitive trunks, around the eyes or behind the ears, the pain is excruciating. Zoologist, Lucy King, applied this knowledge to create a solution for farmers to deter elephants from their crops. It also appears to be a good way to protect the elephants from angry attacks by the farmers.
The Elephants and Bees Project was born after a successful pilot project in 2009. They suspended beehives on a wire at 10 meter intervals around a field. If an elephant touched one beehive, the wire would also swing the other hives. Concurrently, this released even more bees and proved successful in keeping the elephants away.
There are now active beehive fences in Kenya, Botswana, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, Sri Lanka and India. Additionally, the bees help pollinate crops and increase the farmer’s crop yield while safely deterring elephants. Also, the honey provides an additional revenue stream for farmers who harvest it and sell it locally. The result is a win-win for all parties concerned.
