Giraffe Conservation Status
Giraffes are an iconic feature of the savannah. They elegantly wander along the African plains with a distinctive gait. There is no better time to pay attention to these graceful creatures as they are on the brink of extinction.
While it’s fairly common to see giraffe in the wild, they are now considered a vulnerable species. Some species in particular are regarded as Critically Endangered. There are four main reasons for this.
First, their numbers are declining due to poaching for their skins, tails and for bushmeat. Significantly, there has been a 40% fall in their populations in the last thirty years because of illegal poaching.
Second, giraffe populations are threatened by human encroachment into their natural grassland habitat. This results in competition for resources as people chop down trees and clear vegetation in order to develop the land.
Third, civil unrest in countries where giraffe are found has contributed to their status as a vulnerable species. War and military activity plays havoc on the land, and directly impacts their environment.
Fourth, giraffes are also impacted by ecological changes in their natural habitat. These are caused by mining activities and climate change.
Giraffes are also preyed on by big cats, especially lions. This is another natural factor contributing to the decline in their numbers.
Encouragingly, there are various organisations working towards the conservation of this species and their natural habitat. May our Giraffe jewellery inspire you to learn more. Take a stance to help protect these iconic animals for future generations to come.
Once wildlife is gone, it’s gone forever
“Wildlife is something which man cannot construct. Once it is gone, it is gone forever. Man can rebuild a pyramid, but he can’t rebuild ecology, or a giraffe.” Joy Adamson
