Elephant Conservation Status
In 1979, there were 1.3 million elephants in Africa. today, there are approximately 400,000. The massive decline in their populations is largely attributed to poaching due to the illegal ivory trade. However other contributing factors include human-elephant conflict, habitat destruction, and poaching for the bushmeat trade. Over 90% of African elephants have been killed in the last century.
In 1989, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) banned the international commercial trade in elephant ivory. However, governments in problematic ivory markets first need to take action to clamp down on the illegal ivory trade. Concurrently, a difference in poaching levels is likely to be seen. Thankfully, on 1 January 2018, China (the world’s largest market for elephant ivory) banned the domestic trade of elephant ivory. This has subsequently resulted in a drop in its demand. However, there is still much work to be done to protect these endangered species and ensure the ban is enforced.
We hope that these elephant charms and our Wild Elephant Collection will encourage you to take a stance against the ivory trade. Together we significantly help to conserve this incredible species for future generations to come.
