“Cleotha” means “a woman who is a creative and inspiring artist”. This Cleotha Necklace features a statement African hair comb (also known as Afro comb) made by Kenyan artisans using upcycled cow horn.
Hair, grooming and elaborate hairstyles amongst African cultures has been a phenomenon for millennia. Consequently, findings of African hair combs have been dated back to the first millennium BCE (the Nok civilisation), and over the years they have been created in a wonderful array of designs. In addition to its functionality in the creation, maintenance and decoration of hair styles, the Afro comb is also regarded as a symbol of cultural identity.
It is flanked on one side with Mother of Pearl spike beads that make a striking statement. Mother of Pearl is prized for its spiritual and calming properties that promote peace and tranquillity. Its captivating iridescence and beauty makes it sought after in jewellery. In ancient China and Egypt, it was also believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck.
On the other side of the comb lies five leaf shape beads of Sonora Dendritic Jasper. It has amazing patterns that resemble artistic sketches of foliage, creating a very unique design. This stone encourages creativity, clarity and helps with deep focus. Like all Jaspers, it also brings grounded energy, vitality, and protection.
It is finished with a brass chain, clasp and SHIKHAZURI charm, all handmade by Kenyan artisans. The Cleotha Necklace can be paired with jeans and a t-shirt, or will look stunning against your little black dress. Either way, you’ll be sure to stand out from the crowd!
