Duara is a Swahili name that means “round” or “circle”. Circles represent concepts of unity, wholeness and infinity – a beautiful theme that repeats in various forms in this Duara Necklace with three brass rings, made by Kenyan artisans, round lava beads and the natural patterns embedded in the Turritella Agate.
The brass rings are interconnected with circles of black Lava. These beads feature small air bubbles and naturally formed voids, making them completely unique. Black lava is a very grounding stone and because it comes from the Earth, it is said to strengthen our connection with the planet. It also encapsulates the elemental power of fire and has been used as a folk remedy to assist with fertility.
This striking Duara themed combo is anchored by sensational Turritella Agate beads. These Agate are formed from a type of sea snail called Turritella which has a tightly coiled shell in the shape of an elongated cone. The name Turritella comes from the the Latin word turritus meaning “turreted” or “towered”. The shells are often found in the form of this fossilised stone. Take a closer look and be mesmerised by the beauty of nature in fossil form.
The beads are separated by vintage brass spacers from Benin which are made using the centuries old method of lost wax casting. Unlike modern day casting, a separate mould is made for each individual bead, making every one unique. These brass beads have a wonderful aged patina and gives this necklace even more depth of character.
This marvellous Duara Necklace is completed with handmade brass chain, clasp and a SHIKHAZURI charm with an onyx nugget.
This one of a kind piece incorporates original, vintage or antique components. Due to the age and history of these materials, natural signs of wear, patina or historical repairs may be present. These characteristics are inherent to the materials and form part of the individuality and authenticity of the piece.
